At the far side of Melrose Park turn left and climb a steep clay track to the summit of Mt Albert (use marked high route option). Pretty coastal strip but dogged by a narrow footpath and heavy traffic for most of the way. Many sections are over uneven terrain where there is no real ground trail evident. I walked Te Araroa – the 3,000km trail that runs the length of New Zealand – between September 2019 and March 2020, and documented it all here on this blog. Other sections of the walkway are not suitable for dogs as they go through private farmland. Walking along the beach is safe and accessible right to Queen Elizabeth Park except in extreme high tides; in which case use local roads running parallel with the beach. Happy trails! Before I get into the breakdown of my total expenses for Te Araroa, I want to note that my thru-hike of the Te Araroa took less than the average of 4-5 months. River crossings - Never cross flooded rivers, Weather extremes - be aware of the weather forecast and be prepared to wait bad weather out if necessary. At the end of Raumati South Beach, turn inland through piles of driftwood where you see a triangular "Total Fire Ban" sign. A well-graded track leads from here to a swing bridge over the Ōtaki River. A GPS may come in handy here (and across the tops) as the ground trail is not always obvious. Several sections of the route intentionally require kayaking and canoeing as well as the aforementioned ferry. From the summit, the track follows the south side of a westerly ridge to a saddle and then northwest down a ridge to a broad ridge and intersection. Please register your trail usage before embarking on your journey. Turn left here and it’s a 45-minute walk downstream to the Wairaki River ford. Follow Dunns Road for 7km towards Invercargill and another 2km once Dunns Road becomes Stead Street, which crosses the estuary towards Tweed Street, and the start of Invercargill’s CBD where you'll find accommodation, shops etc. It then descends to the northern boundary of Waterloo Station, a Crown Pastoral Lease comprising 3500ha. There is a power pole here with a streetlight attached. This track is through the exotic forest and then across farmland. The track is mainly through bush, climbing into open at Puketoro and Kelleher (unmarked). Water may be available from small streams draining from the left. On occasion, the route will leave farm tracks but it is well marked - just look for the capped posts and/or stiles across each fence. This section takes approximately 4 days and includes long (30km+) stints along 90 mile beach. Shortly after, bear right on a small grassy patch above the main South Ōhau River. It climbs steadily over Mayo Point (666m) and exits the bush edge just before Gable End (903m) after about 2½-3 hours. Cross Wadestown Road at bus toilets, go up steps to Weld Street. For walkers continuing south on Te Araroa Trail, from the Pukerua Bay Railway Station cross the railway track at the safe crossing point then proceed up a slight incline to Te Motu Road, turn right and walk right to the end where you will cross the footbridge over SH1, then once on the western side of SH1 walk south a further 250m to the start of the next section. Few capital cities offer walks with such spectacular views as the section of Te Araroa from Porirua to Wellington's suburbs of Johnsonville or Khandallah. Drop down onto the sand and head south around the estuary mouth and onto Oreti Beach. (122 Gore Street, Bluff) They make awesome coffee using the freshest beans that are roasted in Lumsden. Turn right here and walk the road shoulder into Riverton. Guthook is another app that can be purchased but it does not have trail notes and cannot push trail reroutes and updates like the official app can. Please stick only to the marked track and use stiles where provided. At the top end of Coromandel Street, follow the paved zig-zag path to another small plantation of pine trees. There will still be some cleaning for you to do, prior to your departure, however we will dispose of your rubbish and happy for you to get some washing done. Cross Whitford Brown Avenue. A little way past this, head up onto the north end of The Parade. The track then turns right and follows this line of trees to a gate. You will traverse 2 lovely sections of Kohekohe forest before another steep descent then cross 2 swing-bridges.
